Jean Michel Basquiat was an incredible artist and phenomenon. He began his career as a graffiti artist in New York and was part of the neo expressionism movement. Young, black, very handsome and fantastically gifted he seemed to have the world at his feet. Basquiat was bi sexual and dated Madonna before she became famous. I guess the pressures of being an artist in that weird world took it's toll and he died tragically of a heroine overdose at just 27. This documentary made by his friend Tamara Davis was part of the Sundance selection last year. I'm not sure when it will come to the UK but hopefully it will show at The BFI. If you live in the states and have PBS you can catch it on April 12th as part of their Independent Lens series.
