Swedish Director Ruben Ostlund's film Play looks absolutely fascinating. The film recounts the story of five black kids stealing cell phones from three white boys in Gothenburg. No actual physical violence is involved but role games, group dynamics and the rhetorical skills of the boys. This is not a typical story about race, the black boys play on the image society has already imposed on them but it's how they do it that sounds particularly interesting. It's a study on identity and manipulation.
Nigerian Filmmaker Andrew Dosunmu's Restless City. An African immigrant attempts to survive on the fringes of New York City, hustling to survive. Music is his passion but even falling in love poses a risk. I can't wait to see this, it's a Sundance 2011 entry and is being screened in New York on May 29th. Hopefully it will be shown in London. It looks great.
