Shoe Trees

Shoe trees are interesting spectacles. In the UK, on Wycombe Road, Stokenchurch is a little ash tree filled with shoes. One local tale suggests that newly weds would tie one shoe each together and fling them up the tree to help with fertility. Other explanaions include:

a way for the dead to walk the earth, aliens are coming and a spell to make people walk faster. The real explanation is that one person flung a shoe up a tree and others followed suit but I love the suggestions to solve the mystery and the idea of shoes in trees puts a smile on my face.
